It sounds impossible: it is 95 degrees outside in Monroe, and your air conditioner is frozen solid. Yet a block of ice on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil is one of the most common midsummer calls we get across Ouachita Parish.
Why Coils Freeze in a Louisiana Summer
Your evaporator coil gets cold by design — around 40 degrees in normal operation. It stays above freezing because warm indoor air constantly flows across it. When that airflow or refrigerant balance breaks down, the coil drops below 32 degrees, condensation on the fins freezes, and ice builds until the system stops cooling entirely. In our humidity, there is so much moisture in the air that a frozen coil can become a solid block of ice within hours.
The Three Usual Causes
- Restricted airflow. A filthy filter is cause number one. In a Monroe summer, a filter can load up in 30 days flat. Crushed ductwork, closed vents, and dirty blower wheels do the same thing.
- Low refrigerant. A slow leak drops the pressure in the coil, which drops its temperature below freezing. Topping off the refrigerant without fixing the leak just buys the ice a few weeks off.
- Runtime strain. Systems running nearly nonstop through a July heat wave — common from Sterlington to Bastrop — have no off-cycle to melt early frost, so a small problem snowballs.
What To Do Right Now
Turn the system off at the thermostat — cooling off, fan set to ON to speed the thaw. Do not chip at the ice; a bent fin or punctured coil turns a service call into a replacement. Replace the filter while it thaws. Full melt takes 2 to 24 hours depending on how solid it is. Then have the system checked: if the filter was clean and it froze anyway, you almost certainly have a refrigerant leak that needs a proper repair, not a recharge.
Preventing the Repeat
Monthly filter changes from April through October, a spring tune-up that verifies charge and blower performance, and keeping supply vents open — closing vents to save money does the opposite and can freeze the coil.
